Butterfield Bank and H.M. Customs collaborate on an innovative customs duty payment option via Butterfield Direct ATM.
(Hamilton, Bermuda – 22 May 2006) H.M. Customs, under the Ministry of Finance, and Butterfield Bank today jointly announce an innovative way for Butterfield Bank customers to pay customs duty at Bermuda International Airport.
A new Butterfield Direct ATM was installed in the airport’s H.M. Customs area in early May 2006. It offers a new service only available to Butterfield Card debit cardholders—the ability to pay customs duty at the ATM.
Once activated on 22 May 2006, Butterfield Bank customers can avoid any queue at H.M. Customs and proceed directly to the Butterfield Direct ATM located nearby. Bank customers can use the ATM to pay their duty directly to the Accountant General. (Duty must be calculated by the customer before beginning the transaction.) Customers simply present the ATM receipt, showing duty paid, to the H.M. Customs Officer at the exit checkpoint.
While non-Butterfield Bank customers cannot pay duty through the ATM, they can use the ATM for withdrawals and balance inquiries. Normal bank fees associated with inter-bank transactions will apply.
"Butterfield Bank is very pleased to have been chosen by H.M Customs for this collaboration. This is a unique way to expand our ATM service and it really adds value for our customers. Butterfield Direct customers can choose one of two ways to pay duty, through the cashier at H.M Customs or by Butterfield Direct ATM. Ultimately, this means shorter queues for all travellers," noted Butterfield Bank President and CEO Alan Thompson.
